NAGA- Land


Inhabited by the tribes Nagaland is a beautiful hill station. The place is rewarded with cool fresh air, huge mountains and lush green stretches of land. The early history of the state is associated with the Naga tribes. Nagamese, Hindi and English are the languages spoken here. One must visit the City to experience the panorama of nature, the warmth and hospitality of people, lavish blossoms and coy rivers making their way through the rugged terrains. If you are the victim of hectic monotonous lifestyle and then a tour to Nagaland is for you. Colourful life and culture are an integral part of the 16 officially recognized Naga tribes of Nagaland. These 16 tribes are different and unique in their customs and traditions. These customs and traditions are further translated into festivals which revolve around their agricultural cycle. Songs and dances form the soul of these festivals through which their oral history has been passed down the generations


Kohima is the capital town of Nagaland. Nature has blessed this town with lush green surroundings which is a treat to eyes and soul.

Dimapur is the main commercial centre of the state. Dimapur derives its name from the Kachari dialect. “Di” means “river”, “ma” means “big” and “pur” means “city”, the word Dimapur means “the city near the great river”.

Located at an altitude of 2438 meters above sea level in the north eastern state of Nagaland the heavenly Dzukou Valley seems to be known for its Beautiful Flowers. During spring the entire valley is dotted with colorful flowers which attracts a lot of tourists from far and wide to spend some time in the picturesque and healthy environment. It offers tranquility in plenty. It is often called the 'valley of celestial charm'. The beautiful streams passing through the Dzukou Valley dramatically change into ice during extreme winter.

Tuesang is located at an altitude of 1371.60 m above sea level. It covers around 25 % of the total area of the North eastern state of Nagaland. There are more than 250 villages in the district.The views of its hills, ridges, gorges and valleys fill the heart of onlookers with joy.

When it comes to cuisine Authenticated Naga people are more inclined towards meat. They use simple and flavourful ingredients. Before preparing the mouth watering dished they ferment or dry fish and roasted meat.

 

The river Island “MAJULI”

Majuli is said to be one of the largest river island in the world, a pollution free fresh water island. Situated at a distance of 20 km from Jorhat District of Assam, India, it is one among the natural & cultural heritage site. With river Subansiri on the north bank and river Brahmaputra covering most of the areas , Majuli attracts plenty of birds both local & migratory.. Total area of the island was 1250 sq.km. lying in the lap of the majestic Brahmaputra, but it is steadily decreasing due to strong erosion of the river Brahmaputra. The island is mostly rural and has over 240 villages with a rich mix of different tribes and communities. Majuli Assam is a meeting point of different plain tribes possessing colorful and resourceful identities. The main tribes residing in Majuli are the Misings, the Deoris and Sonowal, Kacharis. There are islands within islands in Majuli and the landmass keeps changing its shape after every summer. Majuli is also considered as the the cultural capital and the cradle of Assamese civilization for the past five hundred years, the satras set up preserve antiques like weapons, utensils, jewellery and other items of cultural significance

There are about Satras now in Majuli of which the Satras of Kamalabari, Auniati & Garmur are worth mentioning. These Satras are propagating the religious ideology of great Assamese. Others among the main attractions are The colorful culture of the tribes , Migratory birds ,The Ali-ao-lvignag festival in Feb-March ,Pottery making ,Mask making ,Paal Namm festival in the end of winter ,The sunset in winter, besides Majuli unfolds a variety of interesting traditional handicrafts, pottery, ethnic culture and dance forms, water sports, village life of a real tribal type and lots more.

 

Guwahati

The starting point to the perfect destination, the city is the gateway to the north-east region. Situated at the shores of the turbulent Brahmaputra, the city is the commercial capital of the entire region and perhaps the biggest and the developing city of the region. Guwahati is a vital tourist base point, besides being an attraction in its own. Guwahati has several places of historical interest and tourist attraction. The main attractions of the place are the

Basistha Ashram, Kalakshetra,
State Museum, State Zoo-cum Botanical Garden,
Science Museum, Planetarium, Dighali Pukhuri.

The city is also enriched with the beauty of several river Island which adds an extra attention and makes the trip more delightful and adventurous. Among them are the Peacock Island,
Umananda Island Temple and
River Cruise on Brahmaputra

You can also enjoy a good shopping time all around the city markets which are busy and noisy and well stocked, especially with local handicraft sand handloom for handicraft item. Besides several malls, Pan Bazar and Fancy Bazar, two of the main commercial markets, that sell a range of items- from muga silk to bell metal, canework to woollen shawls and elegant Naga and Manipur jackets.

Spring Festival in Assam.

With the arrival of the spring season, their comes the colourful festival of ‘Rongali bihu’. Celebrated in the middle of the month of April, the spirit of the colourful spring festival is spreads all over the region. Rongali Bihu is a integral part of assamese culture and tradition. As the name indicates its a colourful festival all about dance, music and merry making. The spring festival is going to be little different this year as sporting activities are also included along with other celebrations.

Rongali bihu is one of the most important part of the assamese peoples, as it one of the most colourful and joyfull festival. The festival brings new hopes, aspirations and freshness to the lives of the people. The festival also has an emotional attachment with the lives of the people, it is celebrated with lots of enthusiasim and spirit and so the assamese people says;

“Ati koi senehor mugare muhora”
“Ati koi senehor maku”
“Tatu koi senehor Bohagor Bihuti”
“ Napati keneke thaku”

Rongali Bihu is also known as the festival of love and affection, as the most traditional way of showing love among the young couples is by giving a “Gamosa”to their loved ones.”Gamosa” is also another important part of the assamese culture and is also used as the symbol of showing respect to the elders and love to others. The aspiring sounds of the ‘Dhul’, ‘Pepa’, ‘Gagana’ will be heard in the entire region and indicates the spirit of the festival. Cultural festivals and functions are organised where you can find Bihu troupes performing at their best. As the assamese people are famous for their great hospitality, various kinds of delicious food and “pitha-pana” are made and served among the guests. With the celebration of Rongali Bihu the people of the region welcomes the new year with new hopes and thoughts in their minds.

 

Nearby Hill stations

As I have mentioned before that northeastern region of India is highly blessed with scenic beauty, here you will find several hill stations too. The perfect destination in the heart of nature. The main hill stations in the region are: SHILLONG, TAWANG, UMRANGSU, HALFLONG, PASHIGHAT and ALONG.
To write about my experiences I would like to start with a brief description about “SHILLONG”.
Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, is a beautiful hill town, situated in the north eastern part of India. Shillong in is situated at an altitude of 1496 m above sea level. Shillong is a destination for the eyes and senses as the place abounds in scenic beauty. The main attractions of the spot are the appealing beauty of the waterfalls, lakes and the caves. It is a popular hill-station which the British used to call the Scotland of the East. Some of the places to visit here are: Shillong Peak, Cherrapunjee (Sohra), Sohpetbneng Peak, Botanical Garden, Lady Hydari Park, Ward’s lake, Umiam Lake, Cathedral of Mary Help of Christian, Bishop and Beadon Falls, Elephant Falls, Spread Eagle Falls, Sweet Falls, Crinoline Falls, Nohkalikai Falls. The other interesting places that you can visit include, the Butterfly Museum and Bara Bazaar.The museum has been breeding and supplying butterflies to conservation organisations around the world. Bara Bazar in the heart of the city is a interesting place to roam around. Some of the items that you can shop for are hand-woven shawls, variety of fruits, bamboo handicrafts and black mushrooms. You can see the local Khasi people wearing their traditional dress Jensem. Orchid Lake Resort offers excellent opportunity for swimming and other water sports. Cherrapunjee, about 54 kilometres from Shillong is has the second highest recorded rainfall in the world. The idle months to visit Shillong are Oct-Nov & Apr-May

TAWANG
Another appealing hill station of the region is ‘Tawang’. It is situated in an altitude of 3500 m above the sea level in Arunachal Pradesh. Tawang is called by several names like the Beautiful Land of Monpas, the Hidden Paradise and land of Dawn-lit Mountains .The place is perfect for religious as well as adventure tourism amidst unexplored scenic beauty. It is surrounded by Tibet in the north, Bhutan in the southwest, Kameng in the east and is separated from the west by Sela ranges. Tawang has its own landscapes, history, religion and architecture. The main places to visit here are the numerous numbers of monasteries and nunneries; up teem lakes, several waterfalls and hot water springs. The rivers Tawang-Chu and Namjang-Chu are ideal for river-rafting activities. There is also an option for rock-climbing, paragliding, skating and other winter sport activities.

 

Wildlife

Wildlife:
The North-eastern part of India is also enriched with various wildlife sanctuaries and National parks which attracts lots of tourist to the region through out the year. These places are home to some of the rarest wildlife species, most of the national parks and sanctuaries are situated in Assam and Meghalaya. Declared world heritage site the Kaziranga National park of Assam is the natural habitat of the one-horned rhinoceros. Besides the one horned Rhinoceros, Elephant, Indian bison, Swamp Deer, Samber, Hog Deer, Sloth Bear, Tiger, Leopard cat, Jungle cat, Hog badger, Capped langur, Hollock gibbon, Jackal, Goose, Hornbills, Ibis, Cormorants, Egret, Heron fishing eagle etc. are also the part of it. During winter various types migratory birds are also seen here. Kaziranga which is the habitat of various wildlife species consist of sheer forest, tall elephant grass, rugged reeds, marshes and shallow pools. Another important World heritage site is the Manas National Park , situated in the bank of river Manas and near the foothills of the Himalayas. The park is the unique combination of the scenic beauty and rare species of wildlife. Manas has its own peculiar faunal features, the rarest species of which are Hispid Hare, Pigmy Hog, Golden Langur, Indian Rhinoceros, Asiatic Buffalo etc. Other commonly seen animals are Elephant, Leopard, Clouded Leopard, Himalayan Bear, Wild Boar, Samber, Swamp Deer, Hog Deer etc. it is also one of the nine tiger reserves of India. Other important national parks and wildlife sanctuaries of Assam are DIBRU-SAIKHOWA NATIONAL PARK,NAMERI NATIONAL PARK,ORANG (RAJIV GANDHI) NATIONAL PARK , POBITORA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY,SONAI RUPAI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY,BURA-CHAPORI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY,LAOKHOWA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY,POBHA OR MILROY SANCTUARY,CHAKRASHILA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY,BORNADI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY,GORAMPANI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY, GOLAGHAT.
The state of Meghalaya is also reach in wildlife. The state has two important National parks Nobrek and Balpakam, and two wildlife sanctuaries - Nongkyllem and Siju. Balpakam is a very fertile land and the Balpakam hills provide scopes for archaeological studies. The fauna of this area includes elephants, wild buffaloes, gaur (Indian bison), sambar, barking deer, wild boar, slow loris, capped langur as well as predators such as tigers, leopards, clouded leopards and the rare golden cats. Nokrek Biosphere Reserve is located in the Garo Hills district. The reserve is one of the least disturbed forest tracts of the sub-Himalayan ranges. It is the first biosphere reserve of its kind in the northeast region. The Garo Hills contain many natural limestone caves. The famous Siju Cave is located very close to the Nophak Lake near the Simsang River Game Reserve. The cave is filled with water and is miles long. The region is rich with various kind of flora and fauna, which attracts thousands and thousands of tourist to the land
