Nearby Hill stations

As I have mentioned before that northeastern region of India is highly blessed with scenic beauty, here you will find several hill stations too. The perfect destination in the heart of nature. The main hill stations in the region are: SHILLONG, TAWANG, UMRANGSU, HALFLONG, PASHIGHAT and ALONG.
To write about my experiences I would like to start with a brief description about “SHILLONG”.
Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, is a beautiful hill town, situated in the north eastern part of India. Shillong in is situated at an altitude of 1496 m above sea level. Shillong is a destination for the eyes and senses as the place abounds in scenic beauty. The main attractions of the spot are the appealing beauty of the waterfalls, lakes and the caves. It is a popular hill-station which the British used to call the Scotland of the East. Some of the places to visit here are: Shillong Peak, Cherrapunjee (Sohra), Sohpetbneng Peak, Botanical Garden, Lady Hydari Park, Ward’s lake, Umiam Lake, Cathedral of Mary Help of Christian, Bishop and Beadon Falls, Elephant Falls, Spread Eagle Falls, Sweet Falls, Crinoline Falls, Nohkalikai Falls. The other interesting places that you can visit include, the Butterfly Museum and Bara Bazaar.The museum has been breeding and supplying butterflies to conservation organisations around the world. Bara Bazar in the heart of the city is a interesting place to roam around. Some of the items that you can shop for are hand-woven shawls, variety of fruits, bamboo handicrafts and black mushrooms. You can see the local Khasi people wearing their traditional dress Jensem. Orchid Lake Resort offers excellent opportunity for swimming and other water sports. Cherrapunjee, about 54 kilometres from Shillong is has the second highest recorded rainfall in the world. The idle months to visit Shillong are Oct-Nov & Apr-May

TAWANG
Another appealing hill station of the region is ‘Tawang’. It is situated in an altitude of 3500 m above the sea level in Arunachal Pradesh. Tawang is called by several names like the Beautiful Land of Monpas, the Hidden Paradise and land of Dawn-lit Mountains .The place is perfect for religious as well as adventure tourism amidst unexplored scenic beauty. It is surrounded by Tibet in the north, Bhutan in the southwest, Kameng in the east and is separated from the west by Sela ranges. Tawang has its own landscapes, history, religion and architecture. The main places to visit here are the numerous numbers of monasteries and nunneries; up teem lakes, several waterfalls and hot water springs. The rivers Tawang-Chu and Namjang-Chu are ideal for river-rafting activities. There is also an option for rock-climbing, paragliding, skating and other winter sport activities.

 

Wildlife

Wildlife:
The North-eastern part of India is also enriched with various wildlife sanctuaries and National parks which attracts lots of tourist to the region through out the year. These places are home to some of the rarest wildlife species, most of the national parks and sanctuaries are situated in Assam and Meghalaya. Declared world heritage site the Kaziranga National park of Assam is the natural habitat of the one-horned rhinoceros. Besides the one horned Rhinoceros, Elephant, Indian bison, Swamp Deer, Samber, Hog Deer, Sloth Bear, Tiger, Leopard cat, Jungle cat, Hog badger, Capped langur, Hollock gibbon, Jackal, Goose, Hornbills, Ibis, Cormorants, Egret, Heron fishing eagle etc. are also the part of it. During winter various types migratory birds are also seen here. Kaziranga which is the habitat of various wildlife species consist of sheer forest, tall elephant grass, rugged reeds, marshes and shallow pools. Another important World heritage site is the Manas National Park , situated in the bank of river Manas and near the foothills of the Himalayas. The park is the unique combination of the scenic beauty and rare species of wildlife. Manas has its own peculiar faunal features, the rarest species of which are Hispid Hare, Pigmy Hog, Golden Langur, Indian Rhinoceros, Asiatic Buffalo etc. Other commonly seen animals are Elephant, Leopard, Clouded Leopard, Himalayan Bear, Wild Boar, Samber, Swamp Deer, Hog Deer etc. it is also one of the nine tiger reserves of India. Other important national parks and wildlife sanctuaries of Assam are DIBRU-SAIKHOWA NATIONAL PARK,NAMERI NATIONAL PARK,ORANG (RAJIV GANDHI) NATIONAL PARK , POBITORA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY,SONAI RUPAI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY,BURA-CHAPORI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY,LAOKHOWA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY,POBHA OR MILROY SANCTUARY,CHAKRASHILA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY,BORNADI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY,GORAMPANI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY, GOLAGHAT.
The state of Meghalaya is also reach in wildlife. The state has two important National parks Nobrek and Balpakam, and two wildlife sanctuaries - Nongkyllem and Siju. Balpakam is a very fertile land and the Balpakam hills provide scopes for archaeological studies. The fauna of this area includes elephants, wild buffaloes, gaur (Indian bison), sambar, barking deer, wild boar, slow loris, capped langur as well as predators such as tigers, leopards, clouded leopards and the rare golden cats. Nokrek Biosphere Reserve is located in the Garo Hills district. The reserve is one of the least disturbed forest tracts of the sub-Himalayan ranges. It is the first biosphere reserve of its kind in the northeast region. The Garo Hills contain many natural limestone caves. The famous Siju Cave is located very close to the Nophak Lake near the Simsang River Game Reserve. The cave is filled with water and is miles long. The region is rich with various kind of flora and fauna, which attracts thousands and thousands of tourist to the land

Peoples and Festivals.

The peoples of northeast mainly consist of the assamese and the tribals divided into different categories according to their states. The main occupation of the peoples is cultivation so the festivals are also related with agriculture. The celebration of festivals are like the assemblage and assimilation of all ethnic groups under the same sky, retaining their respective individual and traditional cultural entities. The simplicity, hospitality true spirit, tradition and lifestyle of the people are reflected through the celebration of different festivals through out the year. The major festivals celebrated in NE are Bihu, Baishagu, Ali-Ai-Ligang, Baikho, Rongker, Rajini Gabra Harni Gabra, Bohaggiyo Bishu, Ambubashi Mela and Jonbill Mela and so on. The Department of Tourism, Govt. of Assam, every year organizes six festivals to encourage tourists to visit Assam. They are Majuli Festival, Elephant Festival, Brahmaputra Beach Festival , Dehing Patkai Festival, Tea Festival, Rongali Utsav.Exhibition will also be there with the demonstration of various craft products specially designed and prepared by experts artistes highlighting traditional glory.Besides, the peoples also celebrate Holi, Durga Puja, Diwali, Swaraswati Puja, Lakshmi Puja, Kali Puja, Idd, Muharram, Me-Dam-Me-Phi, the birth and death anniversaries of Vaishnava Saints Srimanta Sankardev and Madhabdev

NE... just like a paradise

Being a girl from the north eastern part of India, I never missed any chance of exploiting my native. It’s my all time favorite hobby to travel and visit new places and to write about my experiences is also something which I would love to.
The North eastern part of India consists of eight states in itself, so NE region is also known as the states of seven sisters & one brother. The main attraction of the region is its scenic beauty specializing in wildlife, Blue Mountains, mighty rivers, green valleys, flora & fauna and the most colorful peoples. The place can be regarded as an unexploited heaven. For the peoples who love adventure in life, this place is exactly made for you. You can experience Trekking, Mountaineering, White Water Rafting, The Love of Flying, Hang gliding, Para sailing, angling. The region is also blessed with the boon of natural beauty; the view of sunsets from the river Brahmaputra is some thing which is extremely beautiful. It’s an alluring and pleasant destination with various attractive monuments and wildlife.
Few among the wildlife Sanctuaries are Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary, Namdapha Wildlife Sanctuary, Manas National Park, Keibul Lamjao National Park, Orang National Park ,Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary etc. Nested in the beauty of nature this wildlife Sanctuaries have many attractive birds & animals…
